Siemens Purchased by EQT and Strüngmann Family

Siemens AG is selling Siemens Audiology Solutions unit to the Stockholm-based private-equity firm EQT Partners AB and Germany’s Strüngmann family of entrepreneurs as co-investors. The purchase price is €2.15 billion plus an earn-out component and is subject to regulatory approval.

The Arc Honors Oticon for Support of People with Disabilities

In October 2014, The Arc of Somerset County honored Oticon as a key partner in helping to make employment for people with disabilities possible. Oticon provides contract work for three Arc Adult Training Centers where individuals assemble the boxes and interior box shells used to package the company’s hearing solutions.

Update: Permira Bows Out of the Bidding for Siemens Hearing Division

Permira Advisors LLP has dropped out of the bidding process for Siemens’ hearing division, leaving EQT Partners AB as the unit’s most likely buyer. However, GN Store Nord—maker of ReSound, Beltone, Otometrics, and Jabra headset devices—also remains as a bidder, and Siemens could also continue to pursue a future IPO as previously announced.

Clinical Results with a New Wireless Binaural Directional Hearing System

At two independent research sites, sentence recognition in surrounding background noise was found to be significantly superior for individuals with mild-to-moderate hearing loss, when aided with a new binaural beamforming technology, compared to individuals with normal hearing. The performance advantage for the hearing-impaired groups was 2-3 dB SNR.

Clinical Trial on the Effectiveness of Widex Zen Therapy for Tinnitus

The results from this clinical study strongly support the use of Widex Zen Therapy in tinnitus patient management. This individualized comprehensive approach combining counseling (instructional and adjustment-based cognitive behavioral intervention), amplification, fractal tones and/or noise, and relaxation strategies was highly effective in reducing tinnitus handicap in a short period of time, with improvements apparent through at least the 6-month duration of this investigation.

Oticon Hearing Foundation Supports 2014 Project Amazon

Two audiologists from Illinois State University—Lindsay Bondurant, PhD and second-year AuD student Ellen Avoletta—have been selected to travel to the Oticon Clinic in Parintins, Brazil as part of Project Amazon. The Oticon Hearing Foundation will again underwrite the costs for the humanitarian mission that provides audiology care and hearing solutions to children and adults from some of Brazil’s most impoverished communities.

Teen Hearing Loss Not Identified by Screening Questions

According to a report from researchers at Penn State College of Medicine, subjective screening questions do not reliably identify teenagers who are at risk for hearing loss. The results suggest that objective hearing tests should be refined for this age group to replace screening questions.
